When I was in school, a decade ago, our professor made us hand draw type, ink our pictures and create ads with scissors and glue. he said that our limitations with design software will confine and limit our imagination. Just try it and you’ll see exactly what I’m talking about. The point was, to force us to come up with the absolute best product, then worry about getting it in the machine.

Since that time, we’ve all constantly worked at pulling the computer out of the design. We strive to make our print and web feel like the mission it tries to accomplish and it takes more effort that most people notice. Every once in while we find things on the net that inspire this detox and disconnect, here’s one that I found today with a guy creating a computer interface out of mud. This is pretty extreme, most of our inspiration doesn’t come from mud, but the thought how Tom Gerhardt took the feel of a computer out of his personal project is worth taking a look at.

We get resumes quite often. (I personally think people assume that we have more fun than actually getting work done) We make time to carefully go through them. So with that being said, we do our absolute best to point people in the right direction and file away their portfolios in case that day should arise that we invite them to be a part of the Kru.

When we met Kari she lived in Michigan, we honestly had just hired and expanded, and we told her that we’d let her know if something came up. She called us back, came down, met with us and we were blown away by her portfolio and experience. We told ourselves that “she’s gonna get picked up by someone quick” but we hoped the best for her.

Time went by, the opening came, so we quickly got on the horn (email) and asked her if she’d found anything else. She said no, that she had put all of her eggs in one basket. Super score. The next chapter in Kruhu is beginning to unfold as more doors open and another super hero joins the team. You’ll hear more from Kari, as she has founded start up magazines to most recently being a corporate social marketing director – she’ll fit in here, just fine. If you see her, give her a nice warm welcome.

Every once in a while we stop to pay attention to situations around us that demand action. You do it. Everyone does it. Whether it’s stopping your work day and taking your kids to a waterpark or buying food for a friend, the time was now and you did because it crossed your mind. I’m BLESSED to work with such guys that sometimes allow for those situations in our budget.

This past May when we were prepping for Banjo-B-Que, an awesome guy named David was on site at the workshop and runs a car detail shop outside. He gave us a hand at times when the job was paid and at times when it wasn’t a paid gig, out of the kindness of his heart.

I talked to him the other day and asked him how business was, he said “a little slow”, but he’s confident that it will come. This was his advertising.

A sign this size couldn’t be seen from Greene Street. No way. Though I did appreciate the color contrast, it couldn’t properly do the job. We went back to the the office and talked about what would make it more effective.

1.) Maybe strapping the sign to an elephant and teach it to spray cars as they passed? (food = increase in overhead – so no)

2.) Train a team of monkeys to throw poo at the cars at the stoplight. (Give someone a reason to get the car washed – thus creating demand, but keeping the monkeys may be more overhead than the elephant – so no)

3.) Design and build a sign that you can see from 11th and Greene that will last in the weather and reenergize David’s efforts to “do right” and clean some cars.

We went with 3, and the sign is below. If you like it, stop by Anointed Hands Carwash and let David bring your car back to life. If you can do that that, and upon your request, we’ll give you a free installation of wordpress on any server that you’d like. So go down there, get your car washed and compliment the man on his new sign.

There is line in sand between the same style and the same work. We are ever striving to offer clientele options that push the perimeters of our style. Yet, never do I want to be caught delivering the same piece of artwork with a different brand and calling it original. That’s just being lazy.

Have I been there? Sure I have, that’s part of being experienced, we’ve seen (or done) most of the tricks of the trade and we know where to trim time and being original will never be trimmed. An example below, I’d guess the speed artist either was under very specific direction or he/she had a bad night and forgot about the deadline. Either way, everyone does it or has done it. The worst part is, even 20 years later, no one forgets it.

The future of your company can be made or broken by the internet. It’s a fact. It’s also a fact that there are over 80 million different websites on the internet as of June 2010 and that 93% of americans expect your business to be online with some sort of social media network. (43% believe you should interact with them via the internet)

It’s obvious that you NEED to be the internet. I’d guess the majority of people looking at this post already have a website that represents their company. My point is to challenge you. In 2010, its not about just having a web presence. It’s maximizing and focusing on the point of the presence. When we meet with a company I always ask “what’s the point of this site?” many times, people look at me and respond “what do you mean, I need a site.”

That’s exactly the issue with web 1.0 mindsets (at least in Augusta) – from mission statements to bio pages there’s a formula of what companies think create a website. Today, I ask of you to think differently before approaching us. Think beyond a standard website – think about what the real goal is. Is your web presence to inform current clientele? Is it to gain new clientele? Is it glorified business card that serves as a point of reference? We’ll need to know, because we build solutions with a focal point. Our solutions can change how you do business, we can create a system that saves you time or gets you personally more involved with the internet.

Once we help determine the best way to create that solution, we design from the ground up in that direction. If you need guaranteed SEO results then call us. If you need custom artwork that actually reflects your company – call us. If you want hosting with local contact number – call us. If you want to revisit, restart, rebuild or remind the public of who your company really is – then call us.

Growing up I had the opportunity to travel all over the world visiting about 15 other countries, flying to places such as Korea, Germany, Central America and even Siberia. No, it was not cold in Siberia because I went during the summer time. It was quit nice except for the mosquitos. They were huge and everywhere when you left the city!

In all of my travels there was always one big problem. I had to get on an airplane! I am terrified of flying. I am not sure if it is the fact I am about 30,000 plus feet in the air going 700+ mph or I freak myself out thinking who is going to fly the plane if something happens to the Pilots?

My preferred method for traveling around the country is to drive. I love the ability and flexibility to sight see on my road trips and yes, it may have to do with the fact I am in control.

Well, with all of my concerns I think I may have found my solution. This solution will help meet my desire to sight see on my travels, but also give me a little more control when it comes to flying at a lower altitude and not worry about crashing. The solution, the Flying Car! They have now successfully created a car that transforms into a plane which also has a parachute. If there is a problem with the plane while you are in the air you can deploy a parachute that will help safely bring you to the ground. This is really cool!

Check out this video. Click Here!

I can picture myself driving down the interstate on my road trip and decide to make a detour and transform my car into a plane and take off from the interstate! (Although this may not be allowed. Still fun to think about.) I would not have to worry about the hassell of going to the airport, checking my bags, waiting in line, take off my shoes, board the plane and wait to take off. Then when I reach my destination wait for my ride or have a rental vehicle. I think I could get on board with this kind of flying.

Hello.

I’m often approached by clients and acquaintances in need of creative consulting, and more than not, there is a common challenge that seems to be the constant these days — I often hear, “I am in a saturated market with everyone in panic-mode to stay relevant, focused on excellence, and above all, to standout and be a trust-brand. I find myself struggling with the future and I tend to paint a rosy picture to my staff and customers while I slowly die inside.” This condition is commonly known as Economastitis. The eroding economy and fickle consumer has most business owners dazed and looking for what I call the Creative Z-Pak. (For those of you playing the home game, the Z-Pak is a 6 pill prescription antibiotic that can wipe out just about any infection in 5 days.) – an affordable quick solution.

Economastitis is an incurable condition, but symptoms can be alleviated by proper consultations and taking Kruhu+Creative everyday.

While the urgent need for marketing/creative help is valid, it has been my observation that the “quick fix” can often lead to a burn-out or a relapse in panic-mode and a dependency on Creative Z-Paks. Making the Kruhu+Creative investment is key.

Take one Kruhu solution a day, or as needed to treat chronic Economastitis – refills unlimited.

A healthy diet of brand control and marketing treatments can prevent most irregularities and maintain a healthy, energetic business without the negative side effects of re-occurring discomfort associated with Economastitis.

If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms associated with Economastitis, we advise you seek our attention immediately.

Kruhu+Creative is not for everyone. Side effects commonly associated with Kruhu+Creative are: peace of mind, security, brand consistency, excellence, laughter, public attention, revenue, an affection for others, uncontrollable fist pumps, and euphoria.

Kruhu+Creative is not a quick-fix and does not come in a generic form. If you are serious about starting your business off on the good foot or converting your current brand into a legacy, the solution is Kruhu+Creative.

Ask yourself if Kruhu+Creative is right for you, and get back to doing what you were put on this Earth to accomplish.

So here I am, walking through my local, massive grocery store scanning the aisles like only a designer can. As hundreds upon hundreds of familiar labels buzz past my eyes, I settle on something new and surprisingly refreshing. I quickly block everything out of my periphery as I pick up the can to further inspect. First thought; wow, weird name. Steaz iced teaz? Really? Something about the simple look of the can really drew me in though. Mostly white space, nice photos of fruit, simple altered text.

It was such a breath of fresh air in an environment where I am used to getting completely visually over stimulated. Needless to say, I bought a can and gave it a try (it was on SALE after all). While the tea was pretty good, the can was what stuck in my head.

On the topic of grocery design, my husband and I have made a bit of a habit of checking out the beer aisle for new, seasonal package design. One that really stands out is the new Miller High Life package. While neither of us can stand the beverage, if I had never tried it before, the new box may just have triggered a Steaz Iced Tea moment.

See, grocery shopping can be fun! Have you ever bought a product based solely on package design? How did it go?

It’s the 90 mile-an-hour curve ball or the white squall on a sunny day. None of us saw it coming. We’ve done branding for everything from builders to hospitals, but not one of us had done a real sports team identity.

With occasions like this, there’s an edge of terror for a split second that tells you to shutter in fear or go for the goal. Of course, we went for it. It being the branding for Augusta’s new hockey team the River Hawks. Concept was a retro style embroidered River Hawk that wasn’t supposed to be a cartoon bird and in NO WAY have little skinny legs. This crushed my concept out of the gate, my vision for the River Hawk looked like an tennis ball with toothpicks boasting a wad of feathers that would rival any other bird in the park.

One member of the team took it upon herself (hint hint) to just scrap the design by screen method and hit the paper. She hand drew the typeface and detailed the concept into form. The team submitted other designs as well, but quickly dove into progressing this concept to the final brand. The result was exactly what the hockey guys were dreaming for and it was loads of fun for us to be a part of. (Except for me permanently scuffing the floor with a hockey stick).

Three different branding variations were produced for the use of the Augusta River Hawks.

The unveiling event was held at Somewhere in Augusta, with a great turn out and plenty of press. It was an honor for Kruhu to play such a role in helping Augusta’s new hockey team skate into the hearts of the locals.
