Medium Detox

Sunday, August 29th, 2010
When I was in school, a decade ago, our professor made us hand draw type, ink our pictures and create ads with scissors and glue. he said that our limitations with design software will confine and limit our imagination. Just try it and you’ll see exactly what I’m talking about.  The point was, to force us to come up with the absolute best product, then worry about getting it in the machine.

Since that time, we’ve all constantly worked at pulling the computer out of the design. We strive to make our print and web feel like the mission it tries to accomplish and it takes more effort that most people notice. Every once in while we find things on the net that inspire this detox and disconnect, here’s one that I found today with a guy creating a computer interface out of mud.   This is pretty extreme, most of our inspiration doesn’t come from mud, but the thought how Tom Gerhardt took the feel of a computer out of his personal project is worth taking a look at.

2012 Fix

I went to the dollar theater to see 2012 tonight.  Its the most action-packed/depressing movie I’ve ever seen.  The point is to be able to survive a tsunami and another world wide flood.  I figured that it has to be easier than hoarding the worlds resources and building big boats.  Why not make a capsule that was underground, then after the wave goes over you you release it and float to the top.  The capsule then expands with two inflatable arms into a make shift catamaran.  I mean come on people.  This is easy stuff. All you need is device to convert your urine to drinking water and a nice fishing pole.  If Kevin Costner can do it, then you could as well.  There could be good business potential in these devices.
